Gold Glitter Deer Canvas
What you will need:
- White canvas (any size you want)
- Deer stencil
- Black & gold acrylic paint (fabric paint is fine)
- Paint brushes/roller
- Paint tape
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Gold glitter
Using you painters tape, create 3" stripes. If you are using a smaller canvas, make your stripes smaller. To do your stripes, make three marks across your canvas ( side, middle, side) and that will mark where your next line of tape will start. It will also keep all of your stripes in a straight line. Continue that until you reach the bottom of your canvas.
Once your stripes are done, you are ready to start painting. Make sure the tape is pressed firmly down so that the paint doesn't run underneath.
Set your canvas aside for 45 minutes to an hour, or until completely dry. Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the tape and place your deer stencil on the canvas. Use pieces of the tape you just removed to secure your stencil on the canvas to prevent it from moving when you are trying to paint.
Now get your gold paint and fill in your deer stencil. This is just a base coat because you will be going over top of this in gold glitter, so do as many coats of the gold paint you like. I ended up doing 4 to 5 coats because I used fabric paint, which goes on quite a bit thinner.
When you are satisfied with how the gold paint looks on your deer head, start shaking the gold glitter overtop while the paint is still wet. Be very generous with the gold glitter, make sure the entire deer silhouette is covered. Shake all the excess glitter off overtop of a large piece of paper or outside.
This is the final result of the canvas. It makes a perfect gift for a friend, and who doesn't love receiving homemade gifts. This would also be such a great project to do with friends during a holiday craft night because it doesn't take long, and is super easy! It adds such glamor to a room, and looks amazing on a mantel with some green garland or on a shelf. Put this out around the holidays, or keep it out all year round! Your friends and family will love this easy DIY this winter!
Painted Gold Mugs
What you will need:
- A white mug ($1 from dollar store)
- Gold glass paint
- Paint brush
- Pencil
- Masking tape
- Oven
For the first mug, we are going to paint gold around the top and bottom rims of the mug. If your mug doesn't have a defined rim then create your own using the masking tape. Once you have wrapped the tape around the top and bottom of the mug, it is time to start painting!
I was experimenting with paint brushes to decide which one I thought applied the paint the best for this project, and I preferred to use the foam brush. The first couple coats of glass paint will apply very light and look a little streaky. It isn't until the fourth or fifth coat where the paint starts to look nice and pigmented. Make sure the paint is almost dry, if not completely dry, before starting another coat.
When you are happy with how the paint looks on your first mug, set it aside to dry and start working on the second mug. Using the bottom of a pencil, you are going to create a bunch of polka dots around the centre of your mug with a "dabbing" motion all the way around. They can be big or small dots, whatever you prefer!
For the first mug I added "Fa la la la" with a black sharpie, which completed the look of the holiday mug! When you are happy with the way both of your mugs look it is time to put them in the oven, but first it is very important to make sure all of the paint is dry before doing so. If you put them in when the paint is still a little bit wet they will bubble, which is what happened to my polkas dots. Place them in the oven for 30 minutes at 350 degrees F. Putting them in the oven will set all of the work you just did, and you will be able to wash them without the paint rubbing off.
When the 30 minutes is up, crack the oven door open and let them sit in there until they are cool. They of course will be extremely hot so don't even try taking them out, let them cool in the oven completely.
This is what the two mugs look like together when they are done! I think they look adorable as a set and would be another fun craft to do with friends, or a great holiday gift for your fellow tea/coffee lovers! Fa la la la laaaaaa :)
Painted Gold Toss Pillow
What you will need:
- A pillow insert ($8 Fabricland or Walmart)
- White pillow case (from my closet)
- Gold fabric paint
- Paint brush
- Merry and bright stencil (print out or handwrite)
- Pencil
To start, place your pillow insert into the pillow case and place the stencils you chose to use in as well. Position them where you want on the pillow.
Fold the pillow case underneath, and with your pencil make a mark at the side seam and the bottom seam for when you cut and sew the pillow case to fit.
Next, lightly mark where your stencils are on the pillow so that you know where to place them again when you take the pillow insert out.
Once you have made your seam marks and marked where your stencils should be placed, remove the pillow insert and the stencils. Now iron the pillow case to get rid of any wrinkles in the fabric. You want a smooth surface to work with.
Following the marks you made earlier, put your stencils back into the pillow case and line them up with the pencil marks. I didn't have any letter stencils at home, and the ones I printed off were too small so I just drew my own. But if I did have stencils on hand I would definitely use them!
Now with your gold fabric paint, slowly trace overtop of the stencil. You will only need about two coats and then let it dry completely. It doesn't take long for it to dry! Next remove your stencils and then cut and sew your pillow case, leaving a slit at the back to put your pillow through.
Place your pillow insert back into the case and this simple, affordable DIY is complete! It is such a fun way to change up your couch during the holiday season and when the holidays are over, store them away until next year!
